But how easy is it for cities to reach out internationally as well as deal with issues in their own back yard? The current economic crisis is at the forefront of everyone’s mind and it is now more than ever that companies need to cast their nets further and make the most of contacts around the globe. Birmingham is a diverse city with a multi-cultural background and it continues to build working relationships with cities and emerging markets overseas. But not all market places are an open shop for UK businesses to invest in. India’s booming legal market, for example, remains closed to law firms that aren’t based in the country. The Indian government has hinted that it is prepared to liberalise the market, but the Bar Council of India is opposed to this.

Monday, 20th April 200920 April 2009 BLS LAUNCHES NEW SEMINAR PROGRAMME More than 50 lawyers from the Midlands attended the launch of Birmingham Law Society’s new programme of events, aimed at bringing together the different branches of the legal community. Speakers at the first seminar, which took place at Pinsent Masons, included Judge Colin Goodier, David Wait, manager of conciliation and mediation at the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service, and Linda Jones, a partner in the employment team at Pinsent Masons.

Thursday, 30th April 2009Solicitor Bernard Shepherd has taken up the presidency of Birmingham Law Society. He takes the baton from Caroline Coates, who stood down at the Society's Annual General Meeting (28 April), becoming the organisation's 190th president.
