Halliwells - Corporate Law Firm of the Year

On 24 June 2010, law firm Halliwells was named Corporate Law Firm of the Year by a regional business magazine. It was a good night for this Manchester heavyweight, as they also picked up three other awards. The following day news broke that the firm had major debt problems and it is likely to be going into administration.

NEW PRESIDENCY ROLE FOR BERNARD SHEPHERD

Bernard Shepherd has been appointed president of the West Midland Association of Law Societies (WMALS). Formerly president of Birmingham Law Society, Mr Shepherd takes the baton from Ros Caldicott, who has been in the chair for six years and moves across to become secretary of the organisation.

New Out of Court Initiative for City's Judges

Birmingham Law Society has launched a new initiative designed to improve dialogue between the local judiciary and solicitors. The organisation’s dispute resolution committee launched the Judges/Solicitors Forum following a request from regional judges keen to get a better understanding of the issues currently facing solicitors.

JAMES VILLAREAL IS FIRST FROM ENTREPRENEURIAL CATEGORY TO WIN BIRMINGHAM YOUNG PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR James Villareal, chief executive officer of Glide Utilities became the first contender from the Entrepreneurial category to win Birmingham Young Professional of the Year (BYPY) at the event’s 10th anniversary awards ceremony.

During my first week as President of Birmingham Law Society I was encouraged to read a new study which showed that regional firms are winning work from their City rivals. According to the research, conducted by Winmark and presented to the Law Society in London, a third of general counsel said they had increased the amount of work they send to the regional offices of national firms.

NEW PRESIDENT TAKES THE HELM AT BIRMINGHAM LAW SOCIETY

Partner at Sydney Mitchell, Dean Parnell, has taken up the presidency of Birmingham Law Society. He takes the baton from Bernard Shepherd, who stood down at the Society’s Annual General Meeting, and becomes the organisation’s 191st president.
