Free legal advice

» The Legal Services Commission

The Legal Services Commission runs the legal aid scheme in England and Wales.
They work in partnership with solicitors and not-for-profit organisations to get people the information, advice and legal help they need to deal with a wide range of problems.

The Community Legal Service and the Criminal Defence Service are both part of the LSC.
 

» The Community Legal Service Direct (Community Legal Advice and Legal Aid)

Provides free information, help and advice direct to the public on a range of common legal issues (benefits and tax credits, debt, education, housing or employment).
Also gives names and contact details of solicitors who take legal aid cases.

» The Criminal Defence Service

The purpose of the Criminal Defence Service is to ensure that people suspected or accused of a crime have access to advice, assistance and representation.

» St. James Community Support and Advice Centre

The Centre operates from its offices in St James Church. Four advisers, together with the support staff and volunteers, give advice mainly on immigration, benefits, welfare rights, and housing issues.

» Birmingham Employment Advice Clinic – BEAC

The clinic is an outreach service of The College’s Legal Advice Centre. You can have a free individual interview with a specialist employment lawyer who will advise you, with follow-up in writing. The fortnightly clinic is held on Thursday evenings.

» Birmingham Employment Rights Advice Line – BERAL

BERAL offers free preliminary advice on employment law issues to employees.  All advice is given by telephone at weekly clinics on Wednesday evenings throughout the year.  Advice is given by fully qualified specialist employment law solicitors, who work on a voluntary basis.

» Immigration Advisory Service

The Immigration Advisory Service (IAS) is the UK’s largest charity providing representation and advice in immigration and asylum law. The Birmingham Office covers the West Midlands, including Oxfordshire, and Northamptonshire. The IAS can give you a free consultation and may be able to help you free of charge thereafter. Otherwise, they operate a non profit fee paying service.
